An installation is the physical site — the stationary technical unit — where the production process actually takes place. Operators outside the EU can register their installation in the CBAM registry voluntarily, sharing its address, coordinates and main activity with the Commission; registration stays valid for five years. When emissions are calculated from actual data, an installation's production process is divided into system boundaries so each part can be tracked and its emissions correctly attributed.
