system boundary

the group of chemical or physical processes included in the calculation of embedded emissions of goods under the same aggregated goods category

System boundaries mark out exactly which parts of an installation's production process count toward a good's embedded emissions — direct emissions, indirect emissions where applicable, and the emissions of any precursors used. They're defined per aggregated goods category, so two installations making the same product are measured on a like-for-like basis.
